Connecting Alabama Families to Food Through Healthcare

The CARES program — Community Access to Resources, Education, and Support — is a Feeding Alabama initiative that bridges the gap between healthcare and food security in Alabama. Supported by the Daniel Foundation of Alabama and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama Caring Foundation, CARES empowers healthcare providers to screen patients for food insecurity and connect them directly with Alabama's network of food banks and pantries.

In Alabama, 1 in 5 children faces hunger — one of the highest rates in the nation. Food insecurity is a leading social determinant of health, linked to chronic illness, developmental delays, and repeated emergency room visits. By equipping providers to ask the right questions and act on the answers, CARES turns routine medical visits into life-changing referrals.

Whether you are a healthcare provider looking to enroll in the program or a patient seeking food assistance, Feeding Alabama's CARES program is here to help — across all 67 Alabama counties
