1 in 5 Children in Alabama are food insecure
CARES for Healthcare Providers
In Alabama, 1 in 5 children faces hunger — one of the highest rates in the nation. Food insecurity is a leading social determinant of health, linked to chronic illness, developmental delays, and repeated emergency room visits. Feeding Alabama's CARES program equips healthcare providers to ask the right questions and act on the answers, turning routine medical visits into life-changing referrals.
What CARES Is
CARES — Community Access to Resources, Education, and Support — is a Feeding Alabama initiative that bridges the gap between healthcare and food security in Alabama. Supported by the Daniel Foundation of Alabama and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama Caring Foundation, CARES empowers healthcare providers to screen patients for food insecurity and connect them directly with Alabama's network of food banks and pantries.
