Salad in a Jar
Salad in a jar is a build-your-own recipe: layer your favorite greens, vegetables, fruit, and toppings in a jar, shake, and enjoy. It's a fun, healthy lunch you can customize from whatever you have on hand, ready in 30 minutes or less. It's also a great recipe to make with kids.

You Will Need
- Quart-sized jar with a lid (or similar container / zip-top bag)
Ingredients
- 1 cup leafy greens (spinach, kale, arugula, romaine, Swiss chard, spring mix, or cabbage)
- 1/4–1/2 cup vegetables (bell peppers, shredded carrot, cucumber, tomato, red onion, avocado, cooked beets, or sugar snap peas)
- 1/4 cup fruit (apple slices, blueberries, sliced strawberries, or mango chunks)
- 2 tablespoons extras (dried cranberries, sunflower or pumpkin seeds, chopped nuts, shredded or crumbled cheese, or cooked quinoa)
- 2 tablespoons salad dressing of your choice
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Step 1 Choose your ingredients from the categories above. Start with at least one leafy green as the base, then add 2–3 vegetables and 1 fruit. Add an "extra" for more flavor or crunch if you like.
- Step 2 Measure and add your ingredients to a quart-sized jar with a lid (or a similar container or zip-top bag — use plastic if making this with a young child). Drizzle the salad dressing over the top.
- Step 3 Put the lid on and shake well, making sure the dressing coats all of the ingredients.
- Step 4 Open the jar, pour into a bowl, and enjoy!
